Patrick Mouratoglou highlights an overlooked quality in Arthur Fils

Arthur Fils has been putting together an impressive season on the ATP Tour in 2026.

Back from a lengthy back injury since February, he’s moved up the rankings from 42nd to 25th, thanks to a strong run of results.

He made it to the Qatar Open final, reached the quarterfinals in Indian Wells, and then made the semis in Miami. He capped off that stretch by winning his first title since 2024 at the Barcelona Open. The Frenchman now finds himself in the Madrid Open semifinals, set to face world number one Jannik Sinner.

Lately, Fils has been talked about as someone who could break through the grip Carlos Alcaraz and Sinner have had on men’s tennis.

Fils made his mark early with wins over Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev during his breakout season two years ago. But dealing with injuries slowed down his momentum for a while. Now that he’s back fit again and having gained more experience on tour, there’s a growing belief that he could challenge for titles soon if he stays healthy.

Mouratoglou is among those backing Fils. Speaking recently about what makes him special compared to other young players coming up alongside Alcaraz and Sinner at that time, he pointed out something specific: “There is one quality of Arthur Fils that nobody talks about.

“It’s the fact that he’s learning extremely fast, and this is the real quality of the champions. When he’s in a difficult situation or he experiences something negative, he says, okay, this is my issue, next tournament, he solves it.

“When he reached the semifinals in Miami, he was out of gas in his semifinal against Lehecka. He learned from it, the next tournament, he wins the whole tournament and he didn’t run out of gas at all.

“He’s transparent, he identifies the problems, he solves them. This is the sign of the best players.

“When Sinner beats Alcaraz in a big final, Alcaraz says, okay, I see what I need to progress on, he says it, next tournament is corrected. And when Sinner loses to Alcaraz, it’s the same.”

Even at 21, Fils has already shown he belongs among the world’s elite, peaking at a career-high ranking of 14th in April 2025.

His rise came on the back of some strong performances in ATP Masters 1000 events, where he consistently made deep runs.

Fils reached the quarterfinals in Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte-Carlo, notching up some impressive wins along the way.

He took down Lorenzo Musetti in Indian Wells, Alexander Zverev at the Miami Open, and Andrey Rublev at the Monte-Carlo Masters.

In Monte-Carlo, Fils even pushed Carlos Alcaraz to three sets in their quarterfinal clash before ultimately falling short to the Spaniard.
