Serena Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, recently opened up about the brutal reality of sports gambling he witnessed once he started dating the American, highlighting the harassment from sports bettors.

Williams returned to professional tennis in June 2026 after nearly four years away from the sport. She made her comeback in the doubles event at the HSBC Championships alongside Victoria Mboko, with the pair reaching the quarterfinals before withdrawing because of Mboko’s injury.

The 44-year-old later competed in the doubles of the Berlin Open before returning to singles at Wimbledon, where she lost to Maya Joint in the first round. She suffered a knee injury during the match and withdrew from the doubles event. Her performance also drew criticism on social media.

Days after this, Ohanian sat for a conversation with TBPN, where he opened up about the hate he faced from sports bettors after he began dating Serena Williams. Calling it the ‘worst toxicity’ on the internet, he said:

“The worst toxicity I’ve seen on the internet, it was jarring, when I first started dating my wife. And it was tied to sports betting. Anecdotally, it feels like athletes carry a disproportionate weight from sports betting. And it’s easy to just say, ‘Well, don’t check social media,” said Ohanian.

He added:

“But if you’re an athlete, you’re literally just trying to do your job every day, in front of everyone. You already have to live every workday in front of every person on the planet. And if the downside of sports betting and its rampant growth is even more toxicity for the athletes, that feels bad.”

Serena Williams’ husband shared a heartfelt message for her after the Wimbledon upset

After Serena Williams fell short to Maya Joint (3-6, 7-6(6), 3-6) in the first round of the Wimbledon Championships on July 1, her husband, Alexis Ohanian, shared a heartfelt note on Instagram. He posted a bunch of pictures from the tournament showing himself and their daughters cheering for Williams and penned a note in the caption that read:

“Our little family is so proud of you @serenawilliams – even though it wasn’t the outcome you wanted, you’re an inspiration. We love you. @olympiaohanian@adiraohanian are also happy they got to stay up a bit past their bedtime 😏 “

Shortly after her upset in the singles match and sustaining the injury at Wimbledon, Serena Williams announced her withdrawal from the doubles tournament by offering glimpses of her injury and treatment on Instagram.
