Serena Williams and Venus Williams are expected to return to professional competition soon. According to tennis insiders, Serena’s recovery from her knee injury has progressed, and the Williams sisters could hopefully play in the US Open season. The update rolls in after Williams quit her Wimbledon campaign earlier this July after reporting a knee injury.

During a Tennis Channel segment, analyst Jon Wertheim shared an encouraging update on the schedule of the Williams sisters. They stated that Venus is expected to play at Washington after receiving a wild card, while Serena is expected to show up at the Toronto Open alongside Venus, as her recovery has progressed:

“The knee injury that cut short Serena’s Wimbledon return and kept her out of doubles. It looks like it’s healed because we are getting news that she will be back on the hard courts this summer.”

“Let’s go to Washington, D.C., where Venus, at age 46, has a wild card into the main draw. Remember that last year she beat Peyton Stearns for a singles win. She’ll be back in D.C. Then I am told that Venus will be back in Toronto playing an event that gave her a wild card at age 15 in the ’90s. And Serena is expected to be there as well, though it’s uncertain whether it will be just for doubles or doubles and singles.”

“I’m told that the Williams sisters will see how they feel. Cincinnati is entirely possible as the next stop.”

They then hinted at the Williams sisters being expected to play at the US Open, starting with a mixed doubles run:

“Then both are expected to be at the 2026 U.S. Open, starting with the mixed doubles. Perhaps Serena and Carlos Alcaraz. Keep an eye on that, particularly if Carlos Alcaraz’s wrist is healed.”

The suggestion that Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz could team up for mixed doubles has been presented as a possibility. While Alcaraz himself is dealing with a wrist injury, it remains to be seen if both players will get the required medical clearance for a possible partnership at the US Open.

Serena Williams and Venus Williams’ Epic Doubles History

The Williams sisters have dominated the doubles for three decades and captured 14 Grand Slam doubles titles. They captured their first WTA doubles title at the Oklahoma City Open back in 1998, and the first Grand Slam doubles title came just a year later at the French Open.

In 2000, the Williams sisters won a gold medal at the Sydney Olympics and, within the same time period, won their first six majors playing doubles.

Their peak dominance as a tag team came during their run from 2008 to 2012, when the duo won two Olympic golds, seven major titles and was ranked No. 1 in 2010.

While the Williams sisters were one match away from making their historic doubles comeback at Wimbledon, Serena had to give up on the dream. However, with all the insider speculations, it remains to be seen if the iconic duo could reunite for a doubles run once again, this time on the hard court.
