Before arriving at the Mubadala DC Open, Jessica Pegula and Taylor Fritz lit up Tommy Paul’s wedding to Paige Lorenze in New York alongside several other tennis stars. Although the two agreed that Frances Tiafoe stole the spotlight during the festivities, they had differing opinions about how Fritz performed on the dance floor.
What Taylor Fritz and Jessica Pegula Said About Attending Tommy Paul’s Wedding
No. 3 seed Fritz kicked off his campaign at the DC Open with a dominant 6-3, 6-4 win over Zizou Bergs. During an appearance on the Tennis Channel after his victory, the world No. 10 opened up about attending Tommy Paul’s wedding, humorously describing himself as the worst dancer among the players present.
“I mean, I’m the worst dancer for sure. I don’t know who the best dancer was, but I mean, the life of the party, I mean, it’s got to be Foe [Frances Tiafoe], you know? It’s got to be Foe,” Fritz said.
Pegula offered more insight into the festivities when she appeared on the Tennis Channel desk after her 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 win over Magdalena Fręch in her opening match. She said she was pleasantly surprised to see Fritz enthusiastically hitting the dance floor, while reflecting fondly on Tiafoe and Paul’s celebrations.
“I actually, like, I danced a little bit. I mean, Taylor got out there on the dance floor. He did. I was like, wow, Taylor Fritz is on the dance floor,” Pegula said.
“It wasn’t a lot going on. I mean, Frances got out there. Tommy, he was partying. He was into it. But the guys all looked awesome in their suits and they look very handsome. And it was cool to see them all together like that. Like what a fun, fun thing to celebrate,” she added.
After triumphing over Alex Michelsen 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(6) in the quarterfinals, Fritz returned to the Tennis Channel desk, where host Brett Haber informed him that Pegula had praised his dancing. Fritz expressed disbelief over his fellow American’s verdict.
“She said that you were outstanding and that you’re sandbagging and that you actually danced really well. Is she drunk or?” Haber asked.
“She might have had too many drinks. I don’t know what she was seeing,” Fritz responded. “I’ll have to ask her and see what she’s talking about.”
On the tennis front, Taylor Fritz will lock horns with fellow American Brandon Nakashima in the semifinals of the DC Open. In the women’s competition, top seed Jessica Pegula will face No. 4 seed Diana Shnaider in the final four after beating Anna Kalinskaya 6-3, 7-5 in the quarterfinals.
