Learner Tien is honing his clay game all the way to Geneva Open semifinals

Learner Tien cannot play on clay. That’s what tennis experts say.. They say it will take time for his coach, 1989 French Open champion Michael Chang, to get him clay court ready to win a tournament.

This week Tien has had two impressive singles and one doubles win and finds himself in Friday’s Geneva Open semifinals.

Unfortunately for us, Tien and partner Taylor Fritz walked over their quarterfinal doubles match so the duo was one and done in Geneva, but hopefully we seem them play together again.

Who Tien has beaten in Geneva

He defeated Tsitsipas in straight sets by winning two tiebreakers.

Against Michelsen it was a three set affair where Tien jumped out in the lead by winning the first set.

Can Tien win Geneva Open

His work is far from over. He faces Alexander Bublik in the semifinals. The winner plays the winner of the Casper Ruud and Mariono Navone match.

Learner Tien prepares to hit tennis balls to fans after defeating Ben Shelton on Stadium 1 during their BNP Paribas Open third-round match in Indian Wells, Calif., on March 8, 2026.

Ruud is the best clay court player of the four and the presumed favorite to win the tournament.

It will be interesting to see how Tien finishes.
