Alexander Zverev joins the list of players with the most clay-court Masters finals appearances

Alexander Zverev is just one win away from his first ATP Masters 1000 title since 2024 after reaching the final of the Madrid Open.

The German saw off Blockx in straight sets, finishing with a 6-2, 7-5 scoreline. It was a clinical performance that set up yet another meeting with Sinner — and this one comes with plenty of recent baggage.

Sinner has knocked Zverev out of the past four Masters events, so there’s no shortage of motivation for the German heading into Sunday’s final. This will be their 14th meeting overall, but Zverev is still chasing his first win over Sinner since November 2021.

Zverev also reached a notable career milestone with this win. He’s now tied for the fourth-most clay-court finals appearances at ATP Masters 1000 events in history, matching Andy Murray’s total.

According to Opta Ace, Zverev is set to feature in his seventh clay-court Masters final, which ties him with Thomas Muster for the fourth-most since the format was introduced in 1990.

The only players ahead of Zverev in this category are Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Nadal leads the list with an astonishing 33 finals, followed by Djokovic with 19 and Federer with 16.

Zverev’s first clay-court Masters final came at the Italian Open in 2017, where he beat Djokovic to claim the title.

He followed that up by winning the Madrid Open in 2018 and making another trip to the Italian Open final that same year. In 2021, he captured his second Madrid title and returned to the final again in 2022.

Zverev’s most recent appearance on this stage came at last year’s Italian Open, where he took home another title.

One notable gap remains on his record: he has yet to reach a final at Monte Carlo, with his best result there being a semifinal run.
