Jannik Sinner has spoken out after reaching another milestone following his recent win at the Madrid Open.
Sinner secured a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Elmer Moller, booking his place in the fourth round.
The win also pushed him past Rafael Nadal’s record of 23 straight wins at this level, something Sinner acknowledged after the match.
Sinner addresses Big Three comparisons
Sinner is now past Nadal’s best run of wins at Masters 1000 level and is moving closer to the records held by Djokovic (31) and Federer (29).
Speaking after his latest win, Sinner said he didn’t feel comfortable being compared to that trio just yet.
“No, not really,” said Sinner. “I always said, and I continue to say, I don’t, I cannot compare myself with these names. They did so much stuff in their career, I’m just in the beginning. Yeah, they are different level, you know.
“For me, I’m happy to be here. I’m happy to play as many matches as possible. But what they did, it’s something else. I just try to give everything I have a hundred percent in every match. If I win, good. If not, I tried my best and I don’t have regrets. So that’s it.”
Jannik Sinner gives short response when asked about Carlos Alcaraz at Madrid Open
Sinner’s path to the title also looks a bit clearer without Carlos Alcaraz in the draw, especially with the Spaniard pulling out of Roland Garros as well because of his wrist injury.
Asked during the Spanish portion of his press conference whether he had spoken with Alcaraz, Sinner kept his response brief.
“I think that’s quite personal so I won’t answer,” he said.
“His absence is felt not just here, maybe especially here in Spain, but it’ll probably be felt even more in Roland Garros.”
Sinner will turn his attention to Cameron Norrie next as he looks to book a place in the quarterfinals. The pair have never faced each other before, with their first meeting set for Tuesday, April 28.
