Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have long been linked, and the two players know just how closely their paths have followed each other in recent years.

They’ve met often in major tournaments, both challenging and pushing each other as they rise through the ranks.

Rather than causing tension, their rivalry has grown out of respect. That’s why Sinner was visibly upset when he learned that Alcaraz had pulled out of Roland Garros due to a wrist injury.

“I hope he gets better soon because it’s never good to see a player like this be out of the tournament,” said Sinner. “He is an incredible player and I wish him all the best.”

Sinner had already responded to Alcaraz’s withdrawal following his first match in Madrid, but he has since given a more detailed perspective on the situation.

Speaking at his press conference, the world number one was asked if he now views himself as the favourite for both Rome and Roland Garros in light of the news.

But rather than embrace that narrative, he chose instead to express sympathy for his long-time rival.

Sinner responded: “I think this is not what we should talk about. I think the most important thing is to say that, you know, first of all, tennis needs Carlos. Tennis is a much better spirit when he’s around, and also for me personally.”

Sinner may be the clear frontrunner, but Carlos Alcaraz’s absence changes the outlook for everyone else in the draw.

It wasn’t long ago that Novak Djokovic beat Sinner at a major, coming out on top in their semi-final clash at this year’s Australian Open.

Sinner has shown he can be beaten, and players like Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, and even Arthur Fils will be eyeing this tournament as a real chance to make their mark.

Until now, it felt like breaking through both Sinner and Alcaraz was too much to ask from anyone outside their rivalry.

Now though, with only one of them in the mix, there’s a real opening for someone willing to take it.
