French Open organisers hint at Stan Wawrinka wild card decision

Stan Wawrinka has been waiting to find out if he’ll be given a wild card for this year’s French Open.

The 2015 champion, who plans to retire at the end of the season, is unlikely to qualify directly due to his ranking.

Even so, Wawrinka might still make it into the main draw. As a former winner, he could receive a wild card. The tournament hasn’t announced its decisions yet, but a recent social media post suggests he’ll be back in Paris one last time.

French Open looks set to hand Stan Wawrinka a wild card

The French Open made the following statement during a press conference:

“Stan Wawrinka, Gael Monfils and Caroline Garcia’s careers will be celebrated this year.”

“Wawrinka and Monfils after their final match.

“Garcia, between the women’s singles semi-finals.”

With both Wawrinka and Gael Monfils being honoured at Roland-Garros, there’s every reason to expect wild cards will follow for both men.

There is an outside chance the tribute could come after a qualifying match rather than main draw play, but that scenario doesn’t seem likely.

If all goes as expected, fans can look forward to one last appearance from Wawrinka in Paris.

Stan Wawrinka’s 2015 French Open title win

Stan Wawrinka has more than enough reasons to be granted a wild card, having captured the title over a decade ago.

But how exactly did the Swiss star manage to come out on top in Paris?

Entering the tournament as the eighth seed, Wawrinka wasn’t widely expected to overcome names like Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer on his way to the championship.

Perhaps it was that lack of expectation that played into his hands, as he moved through to the quarter-finals with little difficulty.

There, he faced his compatriot and 2009 champion Federer.

Pulled off one of his career-best displays, Wawrinka took down Federer in straight sets: 6-4, 6-3, 7-6.

Meanwhile, Nadal had fallen to Djokovic at the same stage of the competition, ensuring that a new champion would be crowned on Court Philippe Chatrier.

A lot of people thought Djokovic was going to finish off what he started and get closer to completing a Career Grand Slam.

Now 41, Stan Wawrinka is still giving everything he has on the ATP Tour.
