Carlos Alcaraz is still very early in his career, but he’s already building a case as one of the most talented players ever to pick up a racket.

The Spaniard, still only 22, has already collected seven Grand Slam titles – the same total John McEnroe finished his career with.

He’s won 26 ATP titles overall and spent 66 weeks ranked world number one, a mark that puts him level with Jannik Sinner for 12th all-time.

To catch Novak Djokovic’s record of 24 majors, though, he’ll need to maintain this pace for quite some time.

Alcaraz’s former coach Juan Carlos Ferrero believes he can reach those heights but admits there might be one thing that could get in his way.

Speaking to Clay, Ferrero said: “Alcaraz can be one of the best in history. In terms of results, he is already breaking many records.

“He has the tennis, the physicality and the mental strength. The only thing that could stop him would be losing motivation, something that can happen when you start so young.

“I’ve always told him that when motivation runs out, discipline has to take over.

“As long as he keeps enjoying himself and playing the way he is now, he will have a very long career.”

The two went their separate ways during the offseason after a remarkable seven years together as player and coach.

Since then, Alcaraz has gone on to become the youngest player ever to complete the Career Grand Slam.

Carlos Alcaraz’s Monte-Carlo Masters campaign so far

After a disappointing finish at the Miami Open, Alcaraz has put together a strong run at the first clay-court Masters event of the season in Monte-Carlo.

He started his title defence with a straight-sets win over Sebastian Baez, then overcame a tough challenge from Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the third round.

Alcaraz is set to meet Valentin Vacherot for the first time, with a spot in the Monte-Carlo final on the line.

The other semifinal sees Sinner face Alexander Zverev for their third meeting of the season.
