Reigning French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz may not be healthy enough to defend his title when the tournament begins next month in Paris.
Speaking in an interview with LA 1, Alcaraz said a wrist injury that forced him to withdraw from the Madrid Open has become serious enough that he’s not sure he’ll be able to compete at Roland Garros.
He said he’s currently awaiting test results that will go a long way toward determining his status for the second Grand Slam tournament of the 2026 tennis season.
“Well, weâre going to see,” Alcaraz said. “At the end of the day, the next test is going to be crucial for us to say, so weâre going to keep trying to do everything thatâs in our hands for the test to go well.”
Carlos Alcaraz says he is not 100% sure he will be able to play Roland Garros:
âWe are waiting for a test that we will have in these days and the result will be crucial to make a decision. I am trying to be positive and have patience.â

Alcaraz has been photographed in recent days wearing a protective brace on his right hand.
“Iâm trying to have a lot of patience these days, but weâre good. Weâre here waiting a bit,” he said in the interview. “Weâve got some tests here and going forward in a few days. From there, weâll see how the injury is and the steps to follow. Right now, well, Iâm trying to be positive, keep good spirits although these days are getting long.”
The seven-time Grand Slam champion won his first-round match in Barcelona last week, but withdrew from the tournament when tests revealed the wrist issue was more serious than first thought.
Alcaraz’s announcement came after Novak Djokovic also withdrew from the upcoming Madrid Open due to injuries that forced him to miss tournaments in Miami and Monte Carlo. His status for Paris is also in question.
The French Open runs from May 18 to June 7.
