Daniil Medvedev endured a humiliating defeat on Wednesday that may go down as the worst of his career.

Seventh-seeded Medvedev was beaten 6-0, 6-0 by former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini at the Monte Carlo Masters.

The Russian has never hidden his dislike for clay courts, and that certainly showed in this match.

His first serve let him down badly too, landing just 36 per cent and winning only 42 per cent of those points.

The result wasn’t just embarrassing – it marked the first time in his career that he’s lost a match without winning a single game.

Daniil Medvedev had never been on the receiving end of a 6-0, 6-0 scoreline in his ATP Tour career.

That was until today when the Russian hit 23 unforced errors during his Monte Carlo second-round match against Matteo Berrettini.

He lost control of the contest after wasting break-point chances on Berrettini’s serve in the opening game.

The Russian’s frustration boiled over midway through the second set, smashing his racket seven times on the clay before tossing it into the courtside bin.

Despite this setback, Medvedev is expected to stay inside the ATP top 10, as he only dropped 50 ranking points in Monte Carlo.

Berrettini, meanwhile, has now won 17 consecutive games at Monte Carlo Masters. His first-round match saw Roberto Bautista Agut retire at 0-5 due to injury.

“The first game I had to face two break points and after that my game started working pretty well,” Berrettini said on court following his win over Medvedev. “We all know Daniil doesn’t love clay as much as I do but he won Rome as well. That’s why I was focused.”

“I didn’t want to lose my focus because tennis is a tricky sport and anything can happen during a match,” he continued. “So I’m really happy with how I handled my nerves and pleased to be through to the third round.”

Matteo Berrettini makes history

According to OptaAce, Matteo Berrettini became just the fifth player since the ATP Rankings began in 1973 to beat a top-10 opponent by a double bagel scoreline.

The others to achieve this were Damir Keretic, Ivan Lendl, Roger Federer and David Goffin.

OptaAce also reported that Berrettini is only the second player since 1990 to reach the round of 16 at an ATP Masters 1000 event without dropping a single game.

Lleyton Hewitt was the first, winning 17 straight games at the start of his run at the 2002 Cincinnati Open.
