The 2026 Roland Garros tournament is already generating plenty of interest, especially with Carlos Alcaraz pulling out as he looks to recover from a wrist injury.

Alcaraz pulled out of this year’s French Open after suffering a setback with his wrist. The Spaniard’s absence has opened the door for Jannik Sinner, who will be looking to go one better this time around following his loss in last year’s final.

Injury setbacks have become a recurring theme for Alcaraz, especially since the start of 2025 when he tore ligaments in his right foot and hurt his forearm while playing in Miami. Since then, he hasn’t had a smooth run.

On the other hand, Sinner was able to make it back just in time for the Madrid Masters, and despite missing clay events leading up to Roland Garros, he still managed to reach the semi-finals before falling to fellow Italian Luca Nardi.

Arthur Fils’ golden opportunity at this year’s French Open

Fils has put together a strong season on the ATP Tour in 2026 so far, especially considering he spent much of last year recovering from a back injury.

After missing the second half of 2025, he returned to action in February and quickly found his rhythm.

He reached the final in Qatar, made it to the quarters at Indian Wells, followed by a semi-final run in Miami, before finally breaking through for his first title since 2024 at the Barcelona Open.

Fils is currently playing Sinner in the Madrid Open semifinals. He has risen eight places since then and now sits just outside of the top 16 rankings.

If that holds through to Roland Garros, Fils would face one of the top four seeds in the fourth round — assuming he makes it that far — which could work in his favour depending on how the draw shakes out.

If Fils can avoid landing in Sinner’s quarter, he could be looking at his best Grand Slam result yet.

Arthur Fils’ career highlights at the Majors so far

While Fils has collected four tour-level titles and climbed as high as 14th in the rankings, he’s still waiting for a real breakthrough moment at a Grand Slam.

His deepest run so far came at Wimbledon in 2024, where he reached the fourth round.

That year, it was Alex de Minaur who stopped him from reaching his first quarterfinal, taking their match in four sets.

After missing the last three majors due to injury, Fils is set to return to Grand Slam action at Roland Garros – his first appearance in 12 months.

The last Frenchman to win Roland Garros was Yannick Noah back in 1983. It’s been a long wait since then.
