Andy Roddick slams Daniil Medvedev after embarrassing Monte Carlo loss to Matteo Berrettini

Daniil Medvedev suffered a brutal 6-0, 6-0 defeat to Matteo Berrettini at the Monte Carlo Masters, marking the worst loss of his career.

Medvedev managed to win just 17 points in what was a rough afternoon on Court Rainier III.

Tensions boiled over during the match as he smashed his racket several times, with fans taking notice.

Andy Roddick has since weighed in on Medvedev’s behaviour, offering a sharp critique of how he handled himself.

Speaking on the latest episode of ‘Served with Andy Roddick,’ the former US Open champion weighed in on Medvedev’s struggles.

“Meddy loses 6-0, 6-0, that’s a rough one,” said Roddick.

“Of course it’s the first [double] bagel of his career!

“The guy has been number one in the world. You don’t lose 6-0, 6-0 if you’re a good 14 and under player!”

The former US Open champion admitted that even just thinking about such a scoreline would have been tough for him to handle.

“I’m just telling you, I don’t think I would have done it, but 100% it would have crossed my mind. [At] 6-0, 3-0, I’m just thinking can I convincingly turn my ankle and fall over?” he said.

“Maybe that says a lot about my own insecurities but that would matter to me. That would hurt my ego so bad.”

“You cannot explain in fourty nine minutes
it is unfathomable how someone as good as Medvedev loses six-zero six-zero.”

Medvedev’s 2026 season is off to a promising start

Medvedev missed the year-end championships in 2025 for the first time since his debut in 2018, signalling a difficult stretch that saw him win just one Grand Slam match all year.

In response, he made significant changes to his team, bringing in Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke to replace Gilles Cervara. The move paid off quickly, with Medvedev closing out the year by winning the Almaty Open.

The momentum carried into 2026. Now 30 years old, Medvedev has already claimed two titles this season and reached the Indian Wells final.

Those results have pushed him up to fourth place in the ‘Live ATP Race to Turin’, putting him firmly back in the hunt for a spot at the season-ending championships.

If qualification were determined today, Medvedev would join Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Novak Djokovic, Alex de Minaur, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Ben Shelton in Turin.

Of course, there’s still a long way to go before then. And as always happens during clay season – people will wonder whether he can stay put or fall down that list again.

With clay always a bit of a struggle for him (Monte Carlo being a clear example), Medvedev will be looking to get back on track at Madrid Open – which starts Wednesday 22nd April.
