Jamie Murray, a standout in the world of doubles, has decided to retire from professional tennis.

He shared the news on Instagram, reflecting on his career and expressing gratitude to those who supported him along the way.

“My tennis journey comes to an end after 36 years. I feel very fortunate and privileged for all the amazing experiences this great sport has given me,” he wrote. “Thanks Mum, Dad, Andy, Ale, Alan, Louis and Thomas for all your incredible support, efforts and sacrifices throughout my career that allowed me to achieve everything I could in the game. For everybody else that’s helped/supported me – I appreciate all of you! Excited to enter the real world! Jamie.”

Following Jamie’s announcement, his brother Andy has spoken out about what it means for their family and Jamie’s legacy.

Andy Murray shared a message for his brother in a video posted to the LTA’s Instagram account.

“Jamie, I’m not sure what I loved more when we were kids, being on court with you, or winding you up!” he said.

“But I know the way we pushed each other helped us both go as far as we did.“You were the first to win a Wimbledon title, the first British player to reach world number one since the seventies. Seven Grand Slams, 39 titles, and one of the best volleyers in our sport.”

“After 22 years and more than a thousand matches, it’s been weird not checking in on all your results these past few months.”

Looking back at their careers so far, Andy listed several moments that stood out to him.

“Our first Olympics in Beijing was awesome. We won the Davis Cup together. And all those ties back in Scotland.”

The two-time Wimbledon champion then went on to thank his brother for joining him for his final match at SW19 two years ago.

“I’ll always owe you for that final match on Centre Court,” he said.

Jamie Murray is expected to stay around the game after retiring

What Murray does next isn’t set in stone just yet, but there are already signs pointing towards a likely direction.

He’s been doing some punditry and commentary work with Sky Sports lately, including covering the Monte Carlo Masters.

If he decides to stick with it, there’s every chance he could become a regular presence alongside Tim Henman and Laura Robson. He’s already shown he knows what he’s talking about, so it wouldn’t be surprising at all.
