Now that the celebrations have quietened down, Alexander Zverev has already shifted his focus to his next challenge.

Zverev is taking part in both the singles and doubles draws at the Terra Wortmann Open, an ATP 500 event in Halle.

This is his first tournament since lifting his first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros, a major breakthrough after three previous losses in major finals.

Kyrgios, who was also playing doubles in Halle this week, responded to Zverev’s win by highlighting how much he’s respected by other players on tour.

Nick Kyrgios believes that Alexander Zverev’s victory at Roland Garros could be just the start of a dominant run through the rest of the season.

Kyrgios has made no secret of his respect for Zverev’s abilities. Back in December 2023, he even picked him to finish number one by the end of this year.

Kyrgios pleased to see Zverev break through at Roland Garros

Having come through alongside Zverev, Kyrgios was asked if he felt any form of jealousy after his Grand Slam title, and indeed how important it feels for the top of men’s tennis.

Speaking to Tennis TV, Kyrgios said: “Yeah look, I’m the least jealous person ever. So when I see any of my peers winning… everyone can eat, there’s plenty of room for everyone to have success in this world.

“And I’ve realised that I’ve had more success than most athletes in any sport and in any space. So I’m confident enough to know when it was my time and humble enough to realise that it can be someone else’s.

“And to see Sascha finally get over that hump… he’s been one of our most consistent players on tour now for the last 10 years, barring that disgusting injury he had that he bounced back from.

“People forget… to 99% of players that’s a career-ending injury. They could have been content with that career, and he could have come back, but obviously not had the hunger to reach that level again.

“And come back and overcome it and actually be a better player is quite scary to me. The obsession and the diligence that takes is quite insane.

Zverev will play Roman Safiullin next at Halle Open on Thursday while Nick Kyrgios has opted not to play at Wimbledon which begins on July 1st in London.

Nick Kyrgios’ chances of a Wimbledon wildcard

Kyrgios is now in the later stages of his career, one that’s been often interrupted by injuries.

But he’s back on the ATP Tour now and looking to add to his seven career titles, despite the ups and downs he’s faced along the way.

One of his biggest moments came on grass back in 2022 when he reached the Wimbledon final before losing to Novak Djokovic.

That remains his closest run to a Grand Slam singles title. He did manage to win the 2022 Australian Open doubles title with Thanasi Kokkinakis, though.

Kyrgios has been given a wildcard for Halle this week, but faces a tough opening match against third seed Ben Shelton, fresh off a win in Stuttgart.

Kyrgios could be using this ATP 500 event as preparation for Wimbledon, though as world number 899, he’d need another wildcard just to enter the main draw at SW19.

Whether or not he deserves one is debatable. But there’s no question about his talent on grass or his ability to draw big crowds wherever he plays.
