Less than a week ago, Karolína Muchová was battling on Center Court at Wimbledon for the Venus Rosewater Dish and her maiden Grand Slam title. She came agonizingly close but ultimately had to settle for the runner-up trophy after falling to her compatriot and close friend, Linda Nosková.
The World No. 6 now finds herself in the hospital, with her North American hardcourt swing set to begin later than planned.
Karolína Muchová Pulls Out of the National Bank Open in Toronto After Surgery
Muchová enjoyed a phenomenal grass season, clinching the title in Bad Homburg and reaching the final at Wimbledon. The fortnight at SW19 resulted in a career high ranking for the Czech star, who also won the WTA 1000 event in Doha earlier this year.
She has, however, suffered a setback ahead of the North American swing. Muchová was hoping to treat herself to a holiday after her grueling run on grass but was forced to undergo a “small surgery” instead. She didn’t reveal the exact details but conveyed that procedure was successful.
“I had to undergo a small surgery that will keep me off the court for a few weeks. Everything went well, and I’m already working on my recovery,” she said. “Thank you for all your messages and support. I’ll be back soon.”
The 29-year-old has a history of wrist problems and was previously sidelined for 10 months after opting for surgery following an injury sustained during her 2023 US Open semifinal against Coco Gauff. The issue reportedly flared up again last year, prompting her to explore alternatives to surgery.
Following her recent update, Muchová, who reached the fourth round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Canada last year, said, “Sad to be missing Toronto this year. I was really looking forward to making my debut there, but recovery comes first. Wishing everyone a great tournament, and I can’t wait to finally see you all in Toronto one day!”
Karolína Muchová has competed at the tournament three times in her career, all in Montréal, having coincidentally missed each alternate edition when the event was held in Toronto. She would hope to recover in time for the Cincinnati Open, where she was the finalist in 2023. She then has the task of defending her 2025 quarterfinal run at the US Open. If she recovers to full fitness, the two-time semifinalist is likely to be one of the favorites for the title.
