Fresh off a repeat men’s Wimbledon victory, Jannik Sinner is hoping to parlay that success by winning his second-ever U.S. Open title in mid-September. An ongoing, troubling knee injury might throw a wrench into those plans.
On Sunday, Sinner withdrew from the 2026 Cincinnati Open, which happens right before the U.S. Open begins in Queens, New York later this month, in an effort to recover from the injury. Without knowing the full extent of Sinner’s injury, it’s troubling that he had to pull out of a major tournament in an effort to be as healthy as possible for the U.S. Open, which is still only roughly two weeks away at the time of this writing. He is, effectively, giving himself another week of rest to be ready to chase another Grand Slam title.
Here’s hoping that’s enough time for one of the biggest tennis stars in the world:

Thus far in 2026, the world-ranked No. 1 Sinner is 44-3 across all ATP tournaments. His most notable victory was capturing the 2026 men’s Wimbledon title. He has won all six finals he’s appeared in so far and has a 10-1 record against opponents ranked in the ATP top 10 when they have faced him. Provided Sinner is healthy enough to play, he’ll be hoping to add the 2026 men’s U.S. Open title to his trophy case soon enough.
Is anyone else notable missing the 2026 Cincinnati Open?
Funnily enough, Sinner’s biggest rival, world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, will also miss the Cincinnati Open. He, like Sinner, is hoping to return for the U.S. Open.
