MASON â Fans at the Lindner Family Tennis Center on Saturday, Aug. 15 saw an early shocker at the Cincinnati Open when Novak Djokovic was beaten in the Round of 64 by Thiago Agustin Tirante.
Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam winner, had previously reached the Cincinnati Open finals eight times, winning three Rookwood Cups. He was making his first appearance in Mason since defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the 2023 final in the longest match in tournament history (3 hours, 49 minutes).

Tirante is now 23-13 this season and his ATP1000 success continues. At such tournaments this year, he is 10-4, reaching the Round of 16 at the Canadian Open last week and the Italian Open in May

Djokovic was 45-12 all-time in the Cincinnati Open going into Saturday’s match. This is the first time since 2007 he failed to win a main draw match in Mason. That year, he received a first-round bye before falling to Carlos Moya in the Round of 32.
Djokovic had reached at least the Round of 32 in every Cincinnati appearance accept his debut in 2005.
Thiago Agustin Tirante had never beaten a top 3 player before
This is Tirante’s first win over a top 3 opponent, but it is his third victory over a top 10 player this season. Tirante defeated Taylor Fritz earlier this month in the Round of 64 in Montreal and beat Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals of an ATP250 in Houston in April.
