Who is Juan Manuel Cerúndolo, player who beat Jannik Sinner at French Open

The stunner of the French Open came on Thursday, May 28, when top-ranked Jannik Sinner, who had won 30 matches in a row, lost to 56th-ranked Juan Manuel Cerúndolo 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1 in the second round.

Sinner blew a 5-1 third-set lead and was serving for the match when it all fell apart, clearly struggling with the Paris heat and cramping up at nearly every game.

Cerúndolo also denied Sinner a chance to complete a career Grand Slam, and with his next victory, he will vault closer to the Top 40 of the rankings. Cerúndolo will face fellow Argentinian Mariano Navone in the third round.

Here is more about Juan Manuel Cerúndolo:

Who is Juan Manuel Cerúndolo?

Cerúndolo is a 24-year-old from Buenos Aires, Argentina, who relies on a strong left-handed forehand to score most of his winners. He has an older brother, Francisco, who is also on the ATP Tour, and his father, Alejandro, played professional tennis in the 1980s.

He started playing at age 3 at his parents’ academy and turned pro in 2018. His 2026 second-round appearance at the French Open is only the third time he has gotten that far in a Grand Slam during his career.

Cerúndolo, whose nickname is “Juanma” won the BNP Paribas Primrose Bordeaux in France earlier this month, dispatching four Top-100 opponents during the tournament.

With his victory over Sinner, Cerúndolo will reach a career-high of at least No. 49 in the rankings. His only other time facing Sinner was Wimbledon in 2023, losing 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 in just 90 minutes.

He has said Lionel Messi, Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo are his favorite soccer players, and growing up, he looked up to Rafael Nadal, a 14-time French Open winner.
