Though much of the attention this week has been on the HSBC Championship, quality tennis has been played at the WTA 250 Libema Open.
The result was a maiden WTA title victory for 21-year-old left hander Robin Montgomery, a Washington, DC native who turned pro in 2019.

Montgomery has long been considered a rising star in the sport particularly after winning the girls’ singles and doubles’ titles at the 2021 US Open.
Montgomery conquered high ranking opponents en route to Libema Open crown
She enjoyed a career high ranking of World No. 95 in June 2025 but has fallen in the rankings since due to injury. Though Barbora Krejcikova retired from the final due to illness, Montgomery earned some big wins en route to the final.
Montgomery defeated Australians Daria Kasatkina and Ajla Tomljanovic in the earlier rounds. Kasatkina is the 2018 Wimbledon quarterfinalist and former Top Ten player. Tomljanovic is a two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist and a former US Open quarterfinalist.

Montgomery was also a recent doubles partner for Coco Gauff at the 2026 Mutua Madrid Open. The duo advanced to the Round of 16.
The depth of talent in American women’s tennis cannot be overemphasized. Behind Coco Gauff, Amanda Anisimova, Jessica Pegula, Iva Jovic, and Madison Keys, are the rising stars including Hailey Baptiste, sadly sidelined with injury, and Montgomery.
It is also worth noting that depth of talent coming from the Washington, DC area including Frances Tiafoe, Baptiste, and Montgomery. The DMV (Delaware, Maryland, Virginia) area is becoming a US tennis powerhouse, a pleasant anomally as California and Florida are the commonly known bases for emerging stars of the sport.
