Until Carlos Alcaraz returns, Jannik Sinner’s biggest competition is himself

Jannik Sinner won the 2026 Mutua Madrid Open. The fact that he won it is not as big of a headline is how he won it. He defeated Alexander Zverev in straight sets in 58 minutes. Zverev won only three games.

Sinner is in a class by himself while Carlos Alcaraz is out with a wrist injury. At this point, we do not know when Alcaraz will return or how long it will take for him to get match ready when he does.

In the meantime, it has become abundantly clear that Sinner is competing against himself.

What is Sinner’s challenge

Professional athletes enjoy rivalries and players who challenge them to improve their games. That is the on-court relationship between Sinner and Alcaraz.

Conclusion

When Sinner heard the news of Alcaraz’s prolonged absence, he said that tennis needs Alcaraz. While that it true, the fact is Sinner needs him also.

Without Alcaraz, Sinner has to stay physically and mentally focused, but it has to be difficult given that no one has been able to beat him this spring.

It may be easy to become complacent without Alcaraz there pushing him. With the help of his team, Sinner needs to stay healthy and on his game.

For fans who think men’s tennis is boring, it has been one-sided lately, but we need to enjoy Sinner’s personality and level.

If we know anything about this sport, it is that tennis is difficult and fickle, and nothing lasts forever.
