Ben Shelton found an unexpected companion in the stands during his blockbuster clash with Joao Fonseca at the Canadian Open. Shelton’s girlfriend and soccer star, Trinity Rodman, showed up at the Sobeys Stadium to cheer on the American as he startled Montreal with an electrifying win over the Brazilian.

On Sunday, the No. 5 seed Shelton walked onto the Centre Court to seal a straight-sets win over Fonseca in the fourth round. However, before the match, as Shelton prepared to go out, he received an unexpected knock on the door from Rodman, which left him stunned for a few seconds before he finally embraced the USWNT star. Rodman caught the moment on her Instagram, which a user later reposted on X.

Later during the match, Shelton displayed his formidable tennis game and made an exceptional winning forehand shot that gave the crowd, including Rodman, plenty to cheer about.

Also in attendance was the Montreal quarterfinalist Arthur Fils, who joined the crowd in cheering on Shelton as the American fought hard and sealed his quarterfinal spot by beating the Brazilian teenager 6-3, 7-6(3).

Ben Shelton Overcomes Joao Fonseca to Secure Canadian Open Quarterfinal Spot

Ben Shelton’s game against Joao Fonseca turned into a hard-fought battle despite lasting only two sets, as neither gave up on their chances to win.

In the first set, Shelton traded breaks early with the Brazilian teenager before hitting a devastating forehand winner while leading 4-3. The American took home the opening set by breaking Fonseca’s serve to get a 6-3 win.

In the second set, the Brazilian rode high 3-0 before facing a temporary tweak in his right ankle. Shelton took advantage and leveled the set at 3-3, and later, despite Fonseca saving a break point at 5-5, Shelton forced the match into a tiebreak.

The American held his nerve and won the tiebreak to take the match 6-3, 7-6(3). The win was Shelton’s 30th victory of the season.

Shelton, who is the only remaining top-10 player in the draw, will now face Jakub Mensik in the quarterfinals.
