Just a few weeks after facing backlash at the French Open, John McEnroe has once again found himself at the center of controversy, this time at Wimbledon. The American tennis legend drew criticism for his commentary during Felix Auger-Aliassime and Michael Zheng’s third-round clash on Centre Court.

Why John McEnroe Faced Criticism for His Wimbledon Commentary

Following his straight-set wins over Aleksandr Shevchenko and Dino Prižmić, No. 3 seed Auger-Aliassime locked horns with the American Zheng in the third round of the grass-court Major. Zheng battled his way through the qualifiers and secured hard-fought victories over Cameron Norrie and Nicolás Mejía to book his spot in the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.

McEnroe joined the commentary desk for the match. Although the tennis legend initially praised Zheng, highlighting his back-to-back NCAA championships, his tone shifted after Auger-Aliassime started dominating the encounter after winning the first-set tiebreak. The 22-year-old’s performance came under increasing scrutiny from the former world No. 1.

When asked whether Zheng would benefit from the 15-minute break to close the roof after the first set, McEnroe said, “Perhaps just because he played such a crappy breaker, it’ll give him a chance to regroup but I don’t think it makes much difference either way.”

The seven-time Grand Slam champion also reiterated his annoyance with the players having a three-minute warm-up before resuming play.

“I don’t like this warm-up part. This is a complete waste of time to me. It would make it more interesting and exciting if they went out and played right away instead of just going through the motions,” McEnroe said.

As Auger-Aliassime rushed away to a 5-2 lead in the second set, McEnroe said, “Zheng looks like he doesn’t quite know what hit him. He doesn’t know what to do at this stage.”

With Novak Djokovic looming as Auger-Aliassime’s potential quarterfinal opponent, the former world No. 1 emphasized that the Serb would present a significantly tougher challenge on return than Zheng.

“Djokovic would be the favorite without question and he’d have to start the way he’s finishing right now and play at that level to have an excellent shot to do that. And Novak, he’s going to be returning a whole lot better than Zheng is, I assure you that, if they play,” he said. “This guy doesn’t know what hit him, Zheng.”

As the American left the court after his loss, McEnroe identified several areas of his game that needed improvement. “He’s got to get stronger, add to his game, work on that serve. He’s got some things to be proud of and things he needs to work on.”

After watching a replay of Auger-Aliassime’s 7-6(1), 6-2, 6-1 win over Zheng, tennis journalist Myles David criticized McEnroe’s commentary, describing it as the “toughest listen” of the tournament so far.

“Watching Felix Auger-Aliassime’s match back from today which John McEnroe commentated on and….. It is genuinely the toughest listen I’ve heard all tournament,” David posted on X.

Fans expressed similar complaints, with several calling out the former world No. 1 for his perceived “unnecessary” and “harsh” comments about Zheng during the contest.

“Why did he do that? so negative about Zheng while the other commentator said encouraging words especially in the first set. I thought Zheng played pretty decent and smart in the first set at least,” one fan commented.

“He was speaking very highly of Zheng in the first set, but once FAA started to take control of the match, he suddenly became so harsh on Zheng. It felt pretty unnecessary,” said another.

Meanwhile, one user humorously pointed out that McEnroe found fault with every aspect of Zheng’s game.

“McEnroe: Michael Zheng is a good competitor, he just needs to work on his serve, return, movement, court coverage, timing, depth, shot selection, net game, breakpoint play, first ball after serve, first ball after return, grass-court balance, reading his opponent, winning rallies, and tennis,” the user wrote.

Following his win over Michael Zheng, Felix Auger-Aliassime will lock horns with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the fourth round. If he reaches the quarterfinals, the Canadian will be up against the winner of the match between Djokovic and Roman Safiullin.
