Alexander Zverev lost in three sets to World No. 10 Alex de Minaur in the semifinals of the 2026 Vienna Open. The German fell 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4). It marked his ninth loss to a top-10 rival in 12 matches this year.
Tennis journalist Jose Morgado highlighted this stat on X:
“New world #1 Alexander Zverev is now 3-9 vs. top 10 players in 2026. Such a brutal stat.”
One fan, who found the statistic ‘ridiculous’, wrote:
“There should be something that you can’t be No. 1 if you don’t have at least a 50% win rate against the top 10 during the season. This is ridiculous”
“That’s a brutal stat.”
Carlos Alcaraz defeated Daniil Medvedev in the other semifinal, and will now take on De Minaur in Sunday’s final.
Alex de Minaur highlights ‘what made the difference’ against Alexander Zverev in Vienna Open SF
After the match, Alex de Minaur expressed pride at defeating Alexander Zverev and reaching the final of this year’s Vienna Open. The Australian, widely regarded as one of the best movers and counterpunchers on the ATP Tour, said (via The Guardian):
“I’m super proud, super stoked of how I handled the moment. I was very calm, even though I threw in a couple of doubles there.”
De Minaur also cited his aggressive style of tennis in the decisive third-set tiebreak as the reason for his win over the new World No. 1:
“All in all, I played a very aggressive deciding tiebreak. I played on my terms. I was going to go out swinging and playing the right type of tennis, and that’s what made the difference today.”
Alcaraz and de Minaur will face off in the final on Sunday. Meanwhile, Zverev will turn his attention to the Paris Masters.
