Frances Tiafoe and Jaime Faria’s thrilling five-set contest at the 2026 French Open took a fiery turn when tensions boiled over into a heated confrontation, forcing the chair umpire to step in. After Tiafoe emerged victorious in the closely contested battle, he aimed a subtle dig at Faria while shedding light on their argument.

Inside Frances Tiafoe and Jaime Faria’s Heated Argument at the French Open

No. 19 seed Tiafoe was put under pressure during his third-round clash, as Faria clinched the first two sets and surged a break ahead in the third. However, the American turned the tide by converting a crucial break point and ignited a remarkable comeback, winning the third set and dominating the fourth to force a decider.

With Tiafoe leading 2-1 in the fifth set, the American believed Faria’s serve had landed out. However, the chair umpire Marijana Veljović ruled the ball in, which was then confirmed by the Hawkeye replay. The incident prompted Faria to approach the net, with both players engaging in a verbal confrontation.

As tensions flared, Tiafoe could be heard telling the Portuguese to “relax and play,” while Veljović urged Faria to end the conflict.

“This has to stop, all of this, all of this, Jaime, Jaime, this all honestly, I’ll speak to both of you. All of this has to stop,” Veljović said.

The argument intensified when the American also went up to the net and addressed his opponent.

“Don’t act like you’re tough. You’re not hard, bro. Just play, just enjoy the match,” Tiafoe said.

When Faria accused Tiafoe of being “disrespectful,” Veljović asserted that he had shown similar behavior and instructed both players to return to their respective baselines.

“You are being disrespectful,” Faria said.

“You were as well, so please,” the chair umpire responded.

The dispute did not end there, as Faria continued voicing his frustrations and approached the umpire’s chair once again to complain about Tiafoe’s conduct. However, Veljović firmly pushed back.

“You act like you haven’t been saying anything about him or about me,” Veljović said.

Although Faria denied her accusation, Veljović urged him to allow her to officiate the match.

“I never said anything about him,” Faria said.

“Please let me do my job,” Veljović responded.

During the French Open broadcast, John McEnroe suggested Faria had taken issue with Tiafoe inspecting the mark of his serve.

“I don’t know what Faria is complaining about. He’s entitled to look at the mark, for God’s sakes,” McEnroe said.

Tiafoe went on to secure a 4-6, 6-7(2), 7-6(4), 6-1, 6-2 victory after a three-hour, 59-minute battle. Speaking to Sloane Stephens during his post-match interview, the 28-year-old opened up about the heated confrontation, revealing that Faria had been taunting him throughout the match. He even likened the Portuguese to boxer Ryan Garcia and said the argument helped him pull off his comeback.

“I felt like needed that too. Because I’m up at the time but I’m still a little nervous. And he was chirping. He definitely gave me a lot of lip. He thought he was Ryan Garcia or something. So I just had to definitely let him know, like, ‘Just chill out, bro. Just play. Just enjoy being in Paris and just play.’ It was a little back-and-forth. Nothing serious, but it definitely went in my favor,” Tiafoe said.

Up next, Frances Tiafoe will lock horns with Matteo Arnaldi in the fourth round of the French Open. Arnaldi secured a 6-4, 6-7(5), 5-7, 6-4, 7-6[10-4] win over Raphael Collignon to set up a meeting with the American. If Tiafoe triumphs over Arnaldi, he will face Matteo Berrettini or Juan Manuel Cerúndolo in the quarterfinals.
