Taylor Fritz handed bad news after losing to Carlos Alcaraz in Paris as Stockholm draw is announced

Taylor Fritz will be left with a strong feeling of what could have been after his brutal defeat to Carlos Alcaraz at the Paris Masters.

Fritz was beaten by Alcaraz in an epic encounter in the French capital, which ended 6-7(10-12), 7-5, 6-3 in favour of the Spaniard. Worryingly for the American, he had two match points in their lengthy Paris Masters battle.

But Alcaraz produced a stunning comeback to secure the win and a semifinal clash with Casper Ruud. Meanwhile, Fritz will be desperate to bounce back from his French nightmare at the Stockholm Open, but that won’t be easy given his projected draw in Sweden.

Taylor Fritz handed tricky Stockholm draw after Carlos Alcaraz loss

Fritz is the top seed at the ATP 250 tournament, which immediately follows the Paris Masters in the calendar. And that seeding means he has received a first round bye, which is welcome news for the American following his efforts against Alcaraz.

After that, however, he faces a tricky opening test against either Cameron Norrie or James Duckworth. And in the quarterfinals, he could be tasked with taking on one of Holger Rune, Arthur Rinderknech or Zizou Bergs.

Lorenzo Musetti then represents a possible semifinal opponent for Fritz, who could meet Ruud in the final of the Stockholm Open. The Norwegian is the defending champion at the tournament, having won last year’s final against Ugo Humbert, who incidentally is also a potential semifinal opponent for Fritz.

It’s certainly not an easy possible route to the title, which would represent a second ATP success for the American in 2026, and the 12th of his career.

Ben Shelton ends five-year Taylor Fritz run in ATP rankings

Aside from his collapse against Alcaraz, Fritz has added motivation to emerge victorious in Sweden. His defeat has had a major impact on the ATP Finals, for which the American has now failed to qualify.

He was in the running to secure the final place for Turin later this month, but his Paris Masters exit has put an end to that contention. Instead, Alcaraz’s win has ensured that his fellow Spaniard Rafael Jodar has claimed the last spot. And his qualification represents history for the sport, with Jodar becoming the first player to reach the ATP Finals in the same year he made his tour-level debut.

The achievement comes shortly after Jodar broke into the ATP top 10 in record time. Meanwhile, Fritz’s ranking is also of significance. He will now finish 2026 behind Ben Shelton, who will be America’s year-end number one. That brings an end to a fine run from Fritz, who held that honour every year since 2021.
