It didn’t take Mother Nature long to wreak havoc at the Cincinnati Open.
Severe weather in Mason has delayed the first round of qualifying at the Lindner Family Tennis Center on Tuesday, Aug. 11, which was set to begin at 10:30 a.m.
For now, first-round matches will not be played before 11:30 a.m.
With dark skies surrounding the tennis campus, the Cincinnati Open issued a weather warning at 10:03 a.m. urging fans to seek shelter. According to the National Weather Service, several rounds of thunderstorms, flash flooding and strong wind gusts are possible on Tuesday.
The opening round of qualifying will feature a pair of Cincinnati natives fighting for a spot in the main draw. Vignesh Gogineni, 22, won a state title at this facility as a senior with the Mason Comets in 2019 before a standout collegiate career at Yale. He’ll make his ATP debut against Otto Virtanen in the first match on the Grandstand Court.
J.J. Wolf, a Cincinnati Country Day product, is making his eighth appearance at the Cincinnati Open. Wolf is on the comeback trail after missing a year due to a shoulder injury and will open qualifying against Toby Samuel in the final match of the day on Center Court.
(Update 10:59 a.m.): Qualifying matches will not start before noon, the tournament announced).
