Tennis fans have noticed that Serena Williams is not on the WTA playersâ lists for upcoming hardcourt tournaments in Washington, DC, Canada, or Cincinnati.
Many wondered after the knee injury that prohibited her from playing doubles with sister Venus at Wimbledon if we would see Serena again in 2026.
Serena recently took to social media to share an encouraging update.

Will Serena get wildcards
With the WTA calendar turning to the US and North America from the end of July through September, Serena should get tournament wildcards if she wants them.
There is always controversy surrounding wildcards because some think they should be given to players who have worked hard throughout the year but fell short in the rankings and qualifying. They believe that giving wildcards to legends or older players can steal away earnings and rising ranking opportunities for emerging stars.

Whether that is true or not can be argued, but what cannot be disputed is the amount of attention her return to professional tennis at Wimbledon brought to the tournament and ESPNâs rankings of her match with Maya Joint.
At age 44, Serena can fill stadiums and create interest around the sport. She officially retired in 2022 at the US Open. Serena is not coming back to lose in the first round of tournaments. If she accepts wildcards in the upcoming weeks (in singles and/or doubles), it is because she believes she is healthy and able to compete and beat her WTA peers.
