Serena Williams’ return to tennis now includes a second tournament.
On Friday, the WTA announced that Williams will head to Germany from June 8 to June 14th to play in the Berlin Tennis Open at Steffi Graf Stadium. The tennis legend is expected to compete in the 16-team doubles draw. Her partner for the event has yet to be announced.
“Every tournament I add to my schedule right now feels special, and Berlin is no exception,” Williams said in a release. “Iâm excited to compete in front of the German fans and continue building momentum throughout the grass-court season.”
“It might be a unique opportunity to see Serena Williams on the court in Berlin again. We are immensely looking forward to her and her matches,” tournament director Markus Zoecke said.
Williams’ latest news comes on the heels of an eventful week for the 44-year-old.
On June 1, Williams announced her return to tennis after nearly four years away from the sport. She’s slated to begin her comeback schedule with doubles at the HSBC Championships, a warm-up tournament. Williams was granted a wild card to compete. Canadian phenom Victoria Mboko confirmed she is playing doubles with the 23-time Grand Slam champion.
“The Queen is back. An honor to share the court with one of the greatest athletes of all time this week. Even more excited to play doubles together! Tennis is pretty special,” Mboko said in an Instagram post.
