Coco Gauff is building significant momentum ahead of the US Open with her impressive campaign at the Canadian Open in Toronto. The American’s dominant run at the WTA 1000 event has earned high praise from former player-turned-analyst Christopher Eubanks, who highlighted how it differs from Gauff’s typical displays.

Gauff has yet to put a foot wrong at this year’s Canadian Open as she looks to win her first title of the season. Following a first-round bye, she kicked off her campaign with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Kayla Day before defeating Maria Sakkari 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the fourth round in Toronto.
The 22-year-old maintained her form against Alina Korneeva, securing a 6-3, 6-1 victory to book a place in the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 event.
Christopher Eubanks shared his verdict on Gauff’s run during a segment on the Tennis Channel, highlighting that the world No. 4 has been breaking away from the usual patterns of her matches going the distance.
“Just the fact that she’s been getting through these matches in straight sets. I mean, she answered the question right then about how does it feel to be able to make it through your first three rounds in straight sets, where you’re used to sitting down for a Coco Gauff match, feeling like, okay, there may be some ebbs and flows, it might go three sets, but you kind of start to know that at the end of the day, she’s going to get the win,” he said.
Eubanks expressed admiration for Gauff’s ability to bounce back from difficult starts, suggesting that the level of dominance she has displayed will send a clear message to her rivals.
“She’s been doing that, but I’ve been really impressed with her ability to go out there, weather a little bit of storm when she still hasn’t played some of her best tennis at the start of matches and then just rebounds. She’s been rolling, and I think that bodes well for her confidence and certainly sends a message to everyone else in the locker room,” he added.
He also showered praise on Gauff for her composure in crucial moments and the tactical brilliance she has showcased during her matches in Toronto.
“And one other thing. I also love the way she’s been thinking her way through matches. You highlighted her athleticism. That gets talked about a lot. Her ability to win gets talked about a lot, but she’s thinking her way through matches,” he said.
“She is a very cerebral and tactical player and it’s been fun to watch her tennis IQ be on full display as we see her coming to net a little bit more, then finding moments in which she needs to play a little bit more defensive and passive,” he added. “She’s playing the pressure moments well and she’s finding her way through.”
No. 4 seed Coco Gauff is set to lock horns with No. 12 seed Belinda Bencic in the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open, entering the clash with a 6-2 lead in their head-to-head record. Naomi Osaka and Elena Rybakina loom as the American’s potential semifinal opponents.
