Venus and Serena Williams fell in the opening round of their doubles match at the Cincinnati Open and fans are now calling for the sisters to retire for good. However, some have expressed optimism that the two still have the ability to make a deep run at a Grand Slam, while others blasted Venus for committing a double fault in the deciding tiebreak that sealed their loss.

On Monday, the Williams sisters reunited for the first time in four years, hoping to make a promising run in Ohio. However, the Lindner Family Tennis Center saw it all come crashing down after Marta Kostyuk and Peyton Stearns beat them 6-2, 1-6, 10-8.

With Kostyuk and Stearns up 9-8 in the deciding tiebreak, Venus committed a double fault that sealed the match in their opponents’ favor.

Some fans want the sisters to retire, while others slammed Venus for the error.

One user said:

“If Venus and Serena Williams are getting fried by Kostyuk and Stearns in doubles I think it’s a sign to pack it up …”

Another fan wrote:

“It’s long past time for Serena and Venus to understand that their careers in tennis are over. Their vanity projects are embarrassing for them and for all of us who were their fans back in the day. Athletes should recognize when they must retire. Permanently. It’s over.”

Serena Williams’ First Doubles Match With Venus in Four Years

The last time Serena Williams shared the court with her sister Venus was back in 2022 at the US Open. Their reunion in Cincinnati was one of the most anticipated moments, but the comeback got run over by Marta Kostyuk and Peyton Stearns.

The sisters took on the 24-year-olds, who were also teaming up for the first time in a tournament setting. The first set was all Kostyuk and Stearns as the Williams sisters struggled to find their rhythm.

The Williams sisters, however, came out strong in the second set and forced the match into a deciding 10-point tiebreak. They got off to a good start, but Venus committed a double fault with the sisters trailing 9-8 that sealed the win for their opponents.

Kostyuk and Stearns will next take on No. 3 seeds Kristina Mladenovic and Guo Hanyu on Wednesday.
