Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka drew attention to her French Open outfit after posting a cryptic message on social media. Since the beginning of the year, the Japanese star has been showcasing her glamorous fashion sense, from a jellyfish-inspired outfit in Melbourne to a cheetah-print ensemble for the Sunshine Double.
Before her first-round match against Laura Siegemund at Court Suzanne Lenglen on Tuesday, Osaka posted on Threads, saying, âI love couture.â The message has generated significant excitement among tennis fans, who are now speculating about the former World No. 1âs outfit for Roland Garros.
Osaka has won the Australian Open and the US Open twice each in her career, but her best result at Roland Garros has been reaching the third round three times previously. This year, however, with revitalized spirits, the Japanese star aims to overcome the third-round hurdle and make a strong run at the Grand Slam event.
Osaka has faced criticism at every tournament this season, mainly for her unconventional fashion and comments on key issues. However, this time, she attracted attention for a different reason: hosting a dinner party for all Black tennis players in Paris before the tournament.
Naomi Osaka Defended Throwing the All-Black Dinner Party in Paris, France
Osaka and Taylor Townsend organized an all-black tennis players dinner before the French Open, attended by notable players like Coco Gauff, Gael Monfils, and Christopher Eubanks. When social media criticism arose, Osaka promptly clarified her position and defended her decision to host the event.
âFirst of all, I do love everyone for who they are, no matter their race and ethnicity (Iâm literally half Japanese lol). Growing up as a tennis player, I didnât see many people that looked like ME, and I feel like itâs important to celebrate them. Secondly, I feel like itâs important to note that there have been all-white dinners/parties,â Osaka wrote in her clarifying statement.
âI donât know how else to tell you this; I literally see them all the time and have never had an issue with them. To the people who ask this question, I want to ask you this too: âWhat is it about POC getting together that unsettles you so much?â,â she further added.
Back on the court, it will be interesting to see how the Japanese pro approaches her R1 match against Siegemund in the French capital on Tuesday.
