Mubadala DC Open finals matches canceled Sunday, rescheduled for Monday

Hours of rain and uncertainty led to a late Sunday announcement by the Mubadala DC Open to cancel the women’s and men’s finals matches.

Jessica Pegula and Alexandra Eala played for about an hour before leaving the court at around 4 PM EDT. Pegula won the first set 6-4. The second set was on serve 2-1 with Eala leading. Pegula will be up to serve when play resumes.

The women, as well as the men, Taylor Fritz and Rafael Jodar, desperately wanted to play tennis on Sunday. They wanted to travel to Toronto and Montreal, respectively, where the National Bank Open WTA and ATP 1000 tournaments got underway on Sunday. The match schedule at those tournaments was also affected by rain, supending play.

A long day of waiting for the players

The problem was the rain started and stopped multiple times.

On social media, tennis fans were frustrated with the lack of information coming from the Mubadala DC Open. Ticket holders and fans wanting to watch on television were relying on information from journalists and people on-site as the tournament was not sharing updates.

The Tennis Channel aired prerecorded programming and did not offer updates either.

Matches start at 12 PM Monday

Pegula and Eala will finish their match on Monday, and Fritz and Jodar are expected to be play after, not before 1 PM.

Players deal with weather constantly, but this is a tricky time of year to manage it. It is the first hardcourt tournament of the North American swing, but the schedule is tough with DC leading directly into Canada and into Cincinnati with no wiggle room for delays like this on the back end of the tournaments.
