Hailey Baptisteâs 2026 season came to an abrupt halt when she suffered a freak injury at the French Open. The American star has largely stayed out of the spotlight while recovering and undergoing rehabilitation, but she made her first public appearance this week alongside Frances Tiafoe at the 2026 Mubadala DC Open.
Hailey Baptiste Spends Time With Frances Tiafoe at DC Open After Recovery Update
Baptiste hasnât competed on the Tour since her second-round match at the French Open in May, where she damaged her meniscus and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during an awkward forehand shot against Wang Xiyu.
The player, who beat former champion Barbora KrejÄĂkovĂĄ in the first round, called the incident a ânightmareâ at the time. After undergoing surgery, Baptiste said she had âconquered one of my biggest fears.â With the recovery estimated to last around six months, she was ruled out of the rest of the 2026 season.
She, however, reunited with the tennis community as the Tour made its annual stop in her hometown for the Mubadala DC Open. The Washington, D.C. native was spotted courtside with close friend Frances Tiafoe, who is gearing up for his singles and doubles appearances at the home tournament. He begins his singles campaign against Térence Atmane. In doubles, he and Nick Kygrios face Francisco Cabral and James Tracy in the first round.
Baptiste also interacted with fans and signed some tennis balls during her visit. Her appearance comes just days after she provided a positive update on her recovery.
âLast night was actually the first night I slept all the way through. So, a month of waking up maybe like 10-15 times throughout the night in pain or just frustrated because Iâm so uncomfortable. Starting to feel more normal now. Iâm able to obviously walk around,â she said in a video posted on Instagram earlier this month.
Reliving her horrors, the American added, âThe first two and a half weeks were super tough because I was stuck in the hotel and I was getting outside for 30-40 minutes in the wheelchair, doing nothing, just looking around, just useless.â
Hailey Baptiste was on a roll this season, reaching a career high of World No. 25 in May, just weeks before her setback. Her breakthrough run included a semifinal appearance at the Abu Dhabi Open, a quarterfinal exit at the Miami Open against Aryna Sabalenka, and revenge against the World No. 1 in Madrid en route to the semifinals. As Baptiste continues her recovery, it remains to be seen when she stages her comeback.
