Martina Navratilova recently criticized Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White and Portland Fire coach Alex Sarama over their responses to Sophie Cunningham’s stance on transgender athletes in women’s sports.
The debate began after the Fever Guard, Sophie Cunningham, said in an interview with ESPN that transgender women should not be part of women’s sports. She said that her goal was to protect young girls and women in sports, arguing they should not have to compete against them. Following her statement, several WNBA coaches were asked for their views on the issue.
When questioned, the Portland Fire head coach, Sarama, said that he supported people from all communities but declined to give a direct answer on whether biological males should be allowed to compete in the WNBA. He said:
“Yeah, I mean, my focus is as a basketball coach, I be completely honest, like I don’t think I’ve ever had to think about that. I’m completely supportive of, people from all communities, all walks of life, so that’s my stance completely. You know, I’m supportive of everyone in the Portland, you know, the community,” said Sarama.
The reporter again asked whether he would be fine with biological males participating in the WNBA. He replied:
“I think I’ve given my answer already on that question. I don’t feel like I need to go, go deep with that.”
The clip quickly circulated on X and caught the attention of Martina Navratilova, who slammed the coach with a blunt comment on X, writing:
“Another coward… he has no stance.”
The former tennis player also reacted to comments from the Indiana Fever head coach, who, when asked about the issue, simply responded:
“I’m not a biologist.”
Sharing White’s remark on X, Navratilova wrote:
“And another one.”
Martina Navratilova weighed in on Iga Swiatek’s Wimbledon exit
Iga Swiatek’s Wimbledon campaign came to an end in the third round after losing to Alexandra Eala (6-7(11), 2-6) on July 4. Following the upset, Martina Navratilova sat for a conversation with the Tennis Channel, where she highlighted that the Pole did not appear “good emotionally.” Reflecting on Swiatek’s match against Eala, the former tennis player said:
“I think the recipe [for Eala] was to mix up the serves. Hit a lot of body serves into the Swiatek forehand or backhand, and she just could not figure out how to return better serves. She did not get those break points, and she [eala] defended really well. And Swiatek, quite frankly, was not good emotionally. She was just so up and down; she could not keep it together today,” Martina Navratilova said.
Following her early exit at Wimbledon, Iga Swiatek is set to open her Canadian Open campaign on August 4. Her first-round opponent is yet to be decided.
