Kristina Liutova, 16, wins Memphis Classic to become first WTA Tour champion born in 2010s

World No. 229 Kristina Liutova is the first WTA Tour champion to be born in the 2010s. Liutova, 16, came from a set down at the Memphis Classic Sunday in Tennessee to defeat 23-year-old Darja Vidmanova 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.

For a little under half an hour, it appeared that Vidmanova’s first-strike tennis would overwhelm Liutova’s steadier, insistent baseline game. But Vidmanova, who won the NCAA triple crown while representing the University of Georgia, became more defensive as the match wore on, as if expecting Liutova to beat herself.

Instead, her level never dropped, and despite a late surge from Vidmanova when she was 4-0 down in the third set, it was Liutova who collapsed at the net with joy after forcing one last error from her Czech opponent’s racket.

“I want to thank my family and my mom. Look where we got. Look where you brought me. Since three years old you’ve done such an amazing job,” Liutova said during the trophy ceremony.

Russia’s Liutova, who has trained at the Gorin Academy in Redmond, Wa. since 2020, is the first WTA Tour champion aged 16-and-under in seven years, since Coco Gauff at the 2019 Linz Open in Austria.

She came through qualifying at the new 250-level event in Memphis, before defeating top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the opening round. Alexandrova had to retire after struggling with the heat in their match, before Liutova defeated established tour players Maya Joint — coming from a set down — and Caty McNally — she was down 3-1 and 4-0 in each set of a straight-sets win — to reach the semifinals.

There, she defeated Elvina Kalieva for the right to face Vidmanova in the final.

Liutova’s rise to a first WTA Tour title has an increasingly familiar background — a sustained run of remarkable success on the World Tennis Tour, the third tier of professional tennis.

She is now 26-3 in 2026, with a 21-2 record at World Tennis level including three titles. That kind of record presaged the rise of Victoria Mboko, the 19-year-old Canadian who last year won the WTA 1000 Canadian Open, as well as 2024 French Open semifinalist Loïs Boisson and world No. 37 Janice Tjen, who was ranked outside the top 400 at the start of 2025.

Liutova’s title will propel her to world No. 126 when the rankings update Monday, opening up the possibility of another run through qualifying — at the U.S. Open in late August. She is the third teenager to win a WTA Tour title in 2026, after French Open champion Mirra Andreeva (19) and Austria’s Lilli Tagger (18), who last week won the Prague Open.
