American tennis star Jessica Pegula was not aware that a private conversation she was having with her coach on the Indian Wells practice court was being heard by others through a microphone.
Pegula was speaking about French Open champion, Mirra Andreeva, reportedly calling her a diva. She also criticized Andreeva’s coach Conchita Martinez for allowing the behavior.
The WTA Finals are going to be fun. With the Elina Svitolina issue with Mirra Andreeva and Aryna Sabalenka over the Ukrainian War and Pegula and Andreeva, it will interesting to see where everyone is situated for the iconic photo of the top eight players.

Pegula is not wrong
Anyone who has watched tennis in the past year or so can arrive at the same opinion as Pegula. Tennis Channel’s Lindsay Davenport has spoken out about Andreeva’s treatment of Martinez during matches.
It is not as though Pegula was saying it a press conference; she thought she was speaking privately. Some parts of the conversation are difficult to decipher.
Pegula disses Andreeva and her coach Conchita:
“Andreeva is a diva. She needs to be humble. I’ve lost a little respect for Conchita. She eggs on her behavior.”
A reminder that Pegula is the WTA Players’ Council representative.

Andreeva is a great talent, but the “I want to thank myself” comments she adds in every tournament-winning speech are becoming trite.

Pegula will be asked about this
Pegula will likely have to address this conversation in the media leading up to Sunday’s opening round robin matches of the WTA Finals. Fans of Pegula’s The Player’s Box podcast which she hosts with Madison Keys, Jennifer Brady, and Desirae Krawczyk may also hear more about it if Pegula decides to discuss it there.

Pegula may have inadvertantly given Andreeva and Martinez bulletin board material to motivate them to defeat her. The two are not in the same group so that would only happen if both reached the finals.
