Jannik Sinner has capped off a remarkable run by completing the Career Golden Masters, clinching the title with a straight-sets win over Casper Ruud.

The top-ranked player in the world secured a 6-4, 6-4 victory in Rome, marking his first title at the event and adding another milestone to his growing list of achievements.

Jannik Sinner ‘really happy’ after Italian Open title

Speaking to Sky Sports Tennis about what it meant to finally lift the trophy, he said: “I don’t know. It’s tough to say.

“I mean, I think this year was the 50th year since an Italian won [the tournament], and really, really happy, a lot of tension on both sides.

“It was not perfect, perfect tennis for both of us, but I’m really, really happy. Incredible, incredible last two-and-a-half months.

“Yeah, I try to put myself in the best possible position every time, trying to do the best I can, and not every day is simple, but I’m really, really happy.”

Sinner also spoke about how the support from fans has always been there for him. This win in Rome also brings an end to a long wait for another men’s singles champion from Italy. The previous one was Adriano Panatta in 1976.

Panatta won six ATP titles and had a successful clay-court season during his career. While Sinner’s only major title so far is the 2024 Australian Open, and he hasn’t played as many matches yet as Panatta did by his age – 21 versus 91 – this could be just the beginning for him on clay courts.

Jannik Sinner’s message after beating Casper Ruud

Ruud put up a strong fight, but there was little he could do against the world number one, who had the support of the home crowd behind him.

Sinner faced some physical challenges earlier in the tournament but managed to get through tough matches against players like Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev.

After getting past Ruud in the final, he said: “Yeah, I mean, physical
you know, physical, very, very tough, but very happy.

“I try, as I said, there’s a big thanks to my physical team, physio and physical trainer, and those I have with me all year long, trying to keep up my body, which is as important as the tennis coaches, and yeah, so I’m really, really happy.”

Sinner lost just one set during the entire tournament, which came against Medvedev in the semifinals. Along the way, he also defeated Sebastian Ofner, Alexei Popyrin and fellow Italian Andrea Pellegrino.

Sinner has now won five titles this season and holds a 36-2 record for 2024. His next focus is on adding Roland Garros success to his list of achievements.
