Jannik Sinner is known for staying perfectly calm on and off the court. Having played many high-stakes matchups, the Italian has a way of handling pressure. While he continues his dominance this year, winning six titles already and being No. 1 for 81 weeks, there’s an imaginary question: What would happen if you put Sinner against one of the legendary players in tennis history? His co-coach, Simone Vagnozzi, has an ultimate fantasy matchup in mind.

In a recent interview with Corriere della Sera, when asked to choose any past champion he would love to see play against Sinner, Vagnozzi, who works alongside Darren Cahill, didn’t hesitate to pick an absolute tennis icon.
“McEnroe,” Vagnozzi answered. “It would be a clash of two playing styles and two personalities; one impassive, the other pure fire that would make the match unforgettable. And mind you, Jannik is actually a fiery character, even if you wouldn’t guess it. But he knows how to manage his emotions well.”
During a storied career where he won an Open Era record 155 combined titles, the American also held the world No. 1 ranking in both singles and doubles and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Now, he provides expert analyses and commentary for Grand Slam tournaments.
McEnroe is also famous for his fiery persona, marked by racket-smashing on-court outbursts and clashes with umpires, especially at the 1981 Wimbledon tournament, when he was fined for an outburst against umpire Edward James over a disputed line call. Meanwhile, Sinner’s strategy is to keep a poker face throughout the match.
In 2026, the 24-year-old is putting together a brilliant campaign, with five Masters 1000 titles and a Wimbledon, a 44-3 match record, and a milestone Career Golden Masters while being World No. 1. His attitude has a major credit to it.
However, at the French Open, due to cramps and physical exhaustion, he couldn’t keep up and eventually lost to Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second round. And as an analyst, McEnroe gave his two cents about the unexpected loss and what he believes Sinner’s team will do afterward.
Speaking to Tennis 365, the American said, “It is brutal when you have to deal with this kind of heat, but he has had three or four different occasions when he has cramped up. So I’m assuming that over the course of the last three or four years, they (Sinner’s team) have been doing everything they can possibly do, whether it’s testing or food intake, to work out a way to minimize this issue.”
“I think they will continue to do that. In my opinion, it’s in his head a little bit. It’s hard to deal with that and remain calm,” McEnroe added.
Next up, Sinner is scheduled to compete at the Cincinnati Open, which begins on Aug. 11.
