Alex de Minaur’s campaign at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships ended in heartbreak after a crushing loss to Flavio Cobolli in the fourth round. The defeat left the Australian devastated, prompting an honest admission about his emotional state and his career goals, which earned him sympathy from the tennis community.

Why Alex de Minaur Feels His Career Dreams Are ‘Fading Away’ After Wimbledon Exit

No. 5 seed De Minaur appeared to be in stellar form as he claimed dominant straight-set wins over Román Andrés Burruchaga and Adrian Mannarino to reach the third round of the grass-court Major.

After triumphing over Zachary Svajda 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, the Australian was brimming with confidence. Ahead of his battle with No. 9 seed Flavio Cobolli, he took pride in “playing at a high level” while declaring that he was at his “most dangerous.”

“I feel like I’m where I want to be. I’m in a good position. Body’s feeling good. Mentally I’m feeling fresh. I think this is when I’m my most dangerous. I’m hoping that I can put two and two together and play a good match,” De Minaur said in his post-match press conference.

However, De Minaur’s belief came crashing down when Cobolli secured a 7-5, 7-6(4), 6-3 victory in their fourth-round match to book a spot in the quarterfinals. Speaking to the press after his loss, he opened up about feeling “broken inside.”

“I’m broken inside. That’s the reality. You invest so many hours into this job and so many years to have moments like these. Not being able to live up to it is truly heartbreaking. It’s very hard,” he said.

Having fallen short in his effort to reach his maiden Grand Slam semifinal, De Minaur also candidly acknowledged the difficult reality that his career goals were slipping further out of reach.

“I won’t be playing a tournament for a while. But again, they keep piling up. The goals, the belief, the dreams you have start fading away or feeling a little bit further out of reach than they once were. I feel like a couple of years ago I was definitely closer. Now I just feel like I’m drifting a little further away from those dreams. It’s getting harder and harder. That’s the reality,” he added.

Tennis fans sympathized with the 27-year-old, describing it as “disheartening” to hear him be so critical of himself.

“It’s kind of disheartening to see him so down. The results have been subpar lately, yeah, but evidently no one’s taking it harder than Demon himself is,” one fan commented.

“It’s getting harder and harder listening to Alex’s pressers after he loses. I get why he feels like this but I wish it wouldn’t bring him down this much 😔 I hope he can manage to win a masters one day,” another fan wrote.

Others, meanwhile, expressed their desire to see De Minaur bounce back strongly after the setback.

“Will always appreciate athletes who are honest about this kind of struggle. Hope he bounces back, whatever that means ultimately,” a fan posted.

“That’s sad to see. i really hope that he can take a break, and either come back stronger or at least in a better headspace where he can enjoy his results, which are absolutely amazing in the context of the thousands of tennis professionals that exist,” said another.

It remains to be seen where Alex de Minaur will return to action during the North American hardcourt swing after revealing he will spend some time away from the tour following his Wimbledon exit. Flavio Cobolli, meanwhile, will lock horns with home favorite Arthur Fery in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon.
