How Iga Swiatek quietly became the first woman ever to hit 25 consecutive Roland Garros round twos

Iga Swiatek eased through her opening match at the French Open, advancing to the second round without much trouble.

The four-time Roland Garros champion was in complete control against Emerson Jones, wrapping up a 6-1, 6-2 victory over the Australian in just 61 minutes.

Swiatek’s clay-court form coming into Paris was mixed. She started with a quarter-final exit in Stuttgart and then went out in the third round of Madrid before making it to the semi-finals in Rome.

There’s a familiar feeling to her start here too.

Swiatek has become the first player in the Open Era to reach the second round at all 25 of her first Grand Slam events in a decade, according to Opta Ace.

Since 2020, she has made it past the opening round in every major tournament she’s entered. Her last first-round exit came at Wimbledon in 2019, where she lost to Viktorija Golubic.

From 2020 through 2026, Swiatek picked up six Grand Slam titles: four at Roland Garros, one US Open win and one Wimbledon title.

On the men’s side, only three players have matched this consistency: Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer during the 2010s, and Jim Courier in the 1990s.

Iga Swiatek’s next opponent at the 2026 French Open

Swiatek will face 20-year-old Czech player Sara Bejlek in the second round, a matchup they haven’t played before.

Bejlek moved on to round two after beating former US Open champion Sloane Stephens, and now faces a much tougher challenge.

The draw has been kind to Swiatek so far. She won’t have to face last year’s finalists, Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff, until the final.

At the other end of her quarter is Elina Svitolina, who beat Swiatek in Rome and also started her tournament with a win.

If she makes it that far, Elena Rybakina could be waiting for her in the semi-finals. The two have had some memorable battles over the years.
