Grigor Dimitrov, Stan Wawrinka Lead Star-Studded Cincinnati Masters’ Wildcard List

The Cincinnati Open has confirmed a wildcard list that reads as a snapshot of two very different chapters tennis players go through: farewell tours and painstaking rebuilds. Grigor Dimitrov and Stan Wawrinka headline the main draw wildcards, joined by Jack Draper and Gael Monfils. Kei Nishikori, JJ Wolf, Vignesh Gogineni, Mackenzie McDonald and Darwin Blanch have been given spots in qualifying for the Masters 1000 event running August 8-23.

Three of those names are playing the final season of their careers. Wawrinka continues his farewell tour, adding Cincinnati to a list of sentimental main-draw wildcards that has already included the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon this year. Monfils, who revealed last October that he will be ending his professional career at the end of the 2026 season, finds himself with another stage to add to a career that already features one of his late-career pinnacles: the shock victory over Carlos Alcaraz at this very tournament in 2024. Nishikori, who is also retiring at the end of the season, picks up a qualifying wildcard as he continues adding appearances wherever he can before stepping away for good.

Grigor Dimitrov’s journey back has been as tough, and far more interesting in how it unfolded. The Bulgarian suffered a pectoral tear in the 4th round of Wimbledon last year after being up two sets to none against Jannik Sinner, a heartbreaking retirement which marked his 5th consecutive withdrawal due to a physical breakdown. The injury forced him out of the US Open that year, ending his streak of 58 consecutive Grand Slam appearances, and brought his ranking to a low point in nearly 15 years, before he started getting his act together and began to come back strong on the tour.

Dimitrov built form through Challenger wins in Dublin and a quarter-final run in Mallorca before arriving at this year’s Wimbledon. He produced sensational performances in the tournament, defeating 15th seed Jakub Mensik in the second round and then went on to beat 2021 finalist Matteo Berrettini in a five-set battle to reach the fourth round.

“After last year, the way I exited, I would have never known what would have happened,” Dimitrov said afterwards. “But guess what? I am back here, and I am able to rewrite everything.”

Meanwhile, Jack Draper arrives after one of the most injury-plagued periods of his career, with a long-term injury to his left arm dropping him to World No.147. With the slump, the former world No. 4 has to rely on wildcards to build some ranking points in this North American hard court swing and build momentum towards the US Open.

In addition to this, Novak Djokovic confirmed his return for the first time since 2023. The notable moment was when he defeated Alcaraz in a three-hour 49-minute final as redemption for the Wimbledon final loss, and tore his shirt after winning. His return, along with Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev, adds considerable strength to the lineup.
