Britain’s Alfie Hewett is through to a 10th Wimbledon wheelchair singles quarter-final – but compatriot Gordon Reid suffered defeat in the first round.
Hewett began his bid for a second SW19 title with a 6-1 6-3 win over Tom Egberink of the Netherlands.
Hewett completed the career Grand Slam in singles with his 2024 victory at Wimbledon.
He has reached at least the quarter-finals of the singles every year since he made his debut in 2016.
“It is a privilege to be on these courts and it is certainly something I don’t take for granted each year,” the 28-year-old said.
“This is the one tournament where I probably don’t have the best sleep, but that’s because of excitement and the experiences that I’ve had here.
“Wimbledon is really a standout for me. Hopefully it is even better this year.”
Second seed Hewett will face Ji Zhenxu for a place in the semi-finals.
Hewett’s doubles partner Reid was beaten 6-3 6-1 by world number one and defending champion Tokito Oda.
Oda competed with a white wheelchair – a nod to Wimbledon’s all-white dress code.
“I felt like it was impossible to paint it white but this year I really wanted to try this one,” the 20-year-old said.
“It’s how I pay respect to the tournament and to everyone around here and I was really happy to do this one.”
Reid and Hewett begin their doubles campaign on Wednesday.
