Gael Monfils lands new role shortly after his retirement from tennis

Gael Monfils has officially been confirmed as the new captain of the France Davis Cup team.

Monfils has only just retired from tennis, leaving the sport as a 13-time ATP champion and a former world number six. He claimed 588 wins during his glittering career, but has decided that enough is enough at the age of 40.

But the iconic Frenchman has made a very rapid return to the sport, having just been confirmed in a high-profile coaching role. It follows a legendary playing career from fan favourite Monfils that began all the way back in 2004.

Gael Monfils confirmed as France Davis Cup captain

As confirmed by the French Tennis Federation, Monfils is the new France Davis Cup team captain. He will take over in the role from Paul-Henri Mathieu, who was in charge of the nation for the last three years.

Monfils will receive support from fellow French icons Gilles Simon and Richard Gasquet. Discussing his new challenge, the ATP legend said: “It is a great source of pride to become captain of the French national team. This blue jersey represents so much to me. I want to build a real collective project and create the dynamic that will allow us to win titles together.”

Monfils received 15 nominations for the France Davis Cup team during his playing career, from which he has a 12/3 win/loss record. The ATP icon first appeared for his nation in 2009, and last appeared 10 years later in 2019.

France are 10-time champions of the Davis Cup, most recently lifting the trophy in 2017 with a 3-2 final victory over Belgium. Led by captain Yannick Noah at the Pierre Mauroy stadium in Lille, it was France’s first title since 2001.

More recently, Italy have dominated the team event. They have clinched the trophy in each of the last three years, and will be out to add another success in Bologna later this month. France failed to qualify for this year’s Final 8, having lost 3-1 to Canada in September’s round two qualifiers.
