French Open 2026: What Mirra Andreeva’s maiden Grand Slam win means for her and WTA

Mirra Andreeva is the 2026 French Open champion. Though only 19 years old and the first teenage Roland Garros champion since 2020 when Iga Swiatek won the title, this feels a long time coming for a prodigy who has played well since joining the WTA Tour in 2022.

This is a milestone win that takes the pressure off Andreeva and allows her to play freely knowing that she is and will always be regarded as a Grand Slam champion.

The biggest win in Andreeva’s already successful career

This is Andreeva’s sixth career WTA title. With the Roland Garros win, she has won at least one title at each level, possessing a WTA 250, two WTA 500, two WTA 1000, and one Grand Slam. In addition, she is an 2024 Paris Olympics women’s doubles silver medalist (with Diana Shnaider).

There is seemingly no end to her potential as she is an all-court player capable of winning Grand Slams on all surfaces and could be a future WTA World No. 1.

One question mark will be if this French Open win curtails her successful doubles career with Shnaider. Will she focus on singles more, which has happened to a degree already in 2026.

Can she please stop thanking herself publicly

We are very happy for Andreeva who is a talented and deserving Grand Slam champion, but thanking herself in the victory speech is trite. We know mental health is important, and Andreeva gave a shoutout to her sports psychologist in her French Open victory speech.

Nike made a special coat for her with the quote of her thanking herself. She should be proud of herself. We get it. However, at this point, it can go unsaid.
