‘Flirting With Some Monumental Result’ – Frances Tiafoe Makes Bold Admission Ahead of US Open

For Frances Tiafoe, the American hard-court swing is prime time. As the US Open looms just around the corner, and in a season of one title win and many close defeats, Tiafoe believes he is finally ready to claim a major victory. During a recent interview on the Tennis Channel with former pro-turned-analyst Prakash Amritraj, Tiafoe was candid about his dream of a career-defining championship.

Tiafoe, currently the World No. 20, has won the Halle Open on the grass court, although he had a series of early exits this year as well. Last day, at the National Bank Open in Montreal, the No. 15 seed defeated 2014 US Open champion Marin Čilić 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, in the second round. Among his four career titles, three were 250-level, and one was a 500. So he is still searching for a way to make an impact on the big stage.

Setting the stage for New York, Amritraj asked the crucial question, “Where do you feel you’re at? I feel like you’re on the precipice of some massive stuff.”

“I agree. I’m right there,” Tiafoe responded confidently. “I feel like I’m flirting with some monumental result. I’ve been knocking on the door. I’ve been showing up every week, becoming consistent most weeks. I’m giving myself a chance.”

Tiafoe will need that consistency in a Grand Slam. The American is no stranger to deep runs in New York, having reached the US Open semifinals in 2022 after a victory over Rafael Nadal. In 2024 as well, he reached the semifinal after defeating Ben Shelton and Grigor Dimitrov, but lost to fellow American Taylor Fritz.

On the other side, he had a first-round defeat to Terence Atmane at the DC Open last week. At the major events, he failed to move past the fourth round, including a third-round loss to Alexander Bublik in a five-set match at Wimbledon and a third-round defeat to Alex de Minaur at the Australian Open.

At Roland Garros, however, it was a heartbreaking exit after losing to Matteo Arnaldi. Tiafoe held a commanding lead late in the fourth set but had a physical and mental meltdown, losing in a 5-hour, 26-minute five-setter.

All eyes are on the US Open, which is scheduled to begin on August 30. Notably, American men have been desperately searching for a Grand Slam singles champion for over two decades. And Tiafoe remains optimistic, saying, “I think you got to keep showing up and good things happen.”
