2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousovaâs four year suspension for failure to take a doping test is the latest in a series of tennis punishments in recent years that have people uncertain what direction the sport should take.
Vondrousova described the incident as terrifying with an official at her door outside of the testing timeframe she provided. Citing mental stress and anxiety, Vondrousova refused to take the test. Andy Roddick believes it is as simple as who came to test and at what time. If they were outside the timeslot, he believes Vondrousova is right.
As a result, she was administered a bigger penalty that players who failed recent tests, most notably Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner who served suspensions in-season that kept them out of competition for mere months in comparison.

Vondrousovaâs peers are being supportive
Paula Badosa, Sloane Stephens, Katie Boulter, Marta Kostyuk, Eva Lys, Ons Jabeur, who Vondrousova defeated in that Wimbledon final, and her Czech Republic compatriots Linda Noskova and Karolina Muchova shared emojis and encouraging words to her on social media.

Vondrousova could appeal to CAS
Her attorney has not said if Vondrousova will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, but she may elect to do so.

The case could boil down to if players can be subjected to testing outside the one hour per day timeslot they are required to provide to governing bodies 365 days per year for random testing. Roddick explained that his hour was 5-6 AM. If he was traveling or on vacation, he provided his location. He also said it would have been unacceptable for someone to show up at 8:30 PM to do the test.
The last high profile WTA player who appealed to CAS was Simona Halep, and the timeline and lack of structure in her appeal process essentially took away her remaining peak years. Halep was appealing a doping ban over a contaminated substance.
The proposed four year ban could take Vondrosova out of the sport until she is 30.
