Arthur Fils withdraws from the Italian Open due to injury ahead of Roland Garros

With Roland Garros just around the corner, many players are using the Italian Open as their final tune-up before heading to Paris.

The clay-court season continues in Rome, where both ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 events are underway. But for one French hopeful, it’s not going to plan.

Arthur Fils has provided a worrying update after pulling out of the tournament, news that won’t be welcomed by French fans with Roland Garros so close.

Roland Garros is on alert as Arthur Fils picks up an injury

After a strong comeback from injury, Arthur Fils was hoping to build momentum at the Italian Open. He returned to the tour in February following an eight-month layoff with a back problem, and wasted no time in making his mark. The Frenchman claimed the title in Barcelona and reached the final in Doha.

However, his campaign in Rome has been cut short after he retired hurt against Andrea Pellegrino due to a hip issue. Fils took a medical timeout early on, eventually pulling out while trailing 0-4 to the Italian qualifier.

With Roland Garros approaching, it’s not the news French fans wanted to hear, especially with hopes pinned on him for a home victory.

Even though Gael Monfils is nearing retirement, there’s optimism about where French men’s tennis is headed. Still, it’s clear that Fils is already leading that movement.

French Open is also a concern for Novak Djokovic

Fils is far from the only high-profile player dealing with issues heading into the Italian Open. Carlos Alcaraz, for example, pulled out before the event even started.

The Spaniard is sitting out with a wrist problem that will also keep him from competing at Roland Garros.

That absence will be felt across the tennis world. Alcaraz is the defending champion, having beaten Jannik Sinner in last year’s final in what was one of the best matches of the season.

And there is even a worry for 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic as the tournament in Paris nears, albeit for a different reason.

Djokovic had been looking sharp during practice but then suffered an unexpected defeat to Dino Prizmic in his opening match.

This kind of form on clay won’t sit well with his supporters, although history shows he often finds another gear when Grand Slams come around.

While Djokovic’s concerns aren’t injury-related, Fils’ situation is more serious. With Alcaraz already out and Fils potentially sidelined, this would leave two significant absences from this year’s French Open field.

All three players are among those who could challenge Sinner’s recent hold over men’s tennis. The Italian has looked nearly unstoppable lately and heads to Roland Garros aiming to complete his career Grand Slam by winning all four majors at least once.
