Felix Auger-Aliassime and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina produced a thrilling five-set battle during their fourth-round clash at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships. However, the drama didn’t end with the on-court contest, as tensions boiled over into a heated exchange at the net after the Canadian booked a spot in the quarterfinals of the grass-court Major.

In a riveting 4-hour, 26-minute showdown, No. 22 seed Davidovich Fokina drew first blood by edging the first set in a tiebreak. However, No. 3 seed Auger-Aliassime saved three set points before winning the second and went on to clinch the third set to seize control of the match.

The contest took a dramatic turn when the Canadian served for the match at 5-4 in the fourth set. Trailing 15-40 in the crucial service game, Auger-Aliassime watched as Davidovich Fokina collapsed to the ground while clutching his ankle and received treatment from the physiotherapist.

The interruption proved costly for the No. 3 seed, as he double-faulted upon the resumption of play and lost the game. Davidovich Fokina then forced a fourth-set tiebreak, which he won to send the match into a decider.

Nevertheless, Auger-Aliassime dominated the deciding set to claim a hard-fought 6-7(4), 7-6(6), 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-1 victory and advance to the quarterfinals. However, his moment of triumph was overshadowed by controversy.

After shaking hands at the net, the two players became involved in a heated exchange, seemingly over Davidovich Fokina’s injury.

The argument continued when Davidovich Fokina approached the world No. 4 while making his way off the court.

When asked about the confrontation during his post-match press conference, Auger-Aliassime refused to delve into the details but made it clear that the Spaniard was aware of his opinion.

“The interactions between him and I, I don’t want to get into that. If he wants to come in here and talk about it, he can. But he knows my opinion. It’s one of these things that I have differences with people in my life on tour. They know what I think and that’s the most important,” he said.

However, the root of the Canadian’s frustration was evidently Davidovich Fokina’s injury, as he criticized the rule that allows players to receive treatment during their opponent’s service game. He argued that it could be exploited to gain an unfair advantage.

“What I can say though is that I think the rule has to change. I think that obviously as long as the rules like that, player will use it in their advantage,” Auger-Aliassime said.

“And I think that it’s very simple. If you’re hurt bad or you’re hurt while the game’s going on of your opponent, in the middle of the game, the opponent is serving, the shot clock is on and basically if you’re hurt bad you’re forfeiting every point until you can call the physio. If the physio helps you to recover then you play your service game right and if you’re hurt bad then you retire obviously,” he added.

The world No. 4 went on to describe the rule as a “disgrace,” saying, “But to stop in the middle of an opponent’s service game and to be able to call the physio I think that’s a disgrace of a rule. I don’t see any other sport where you can do that. Mark my words. It’s a disgrace of a rule. So that’s it.”

When asked whether he had raised his complaints with an official, Auger-Aliassime revealed that discussions were ongoing but emphasized that the rule should be scrapped in time for the 2027 season.

“I didn’t need to speak about it. The conversation is ongoing but nobody’s taking decisions. You know what I mean? Like yeah, it will come in the future. No. Like it’s simple. 2027 comes, boom, you change the rule. End of the conversation. Like enough discussing,” he said.

Up next, Felix Auger-Aliassime will need to overcome a tough test to reach his maiden Wimbledon semifinal, with Novak Djokovic standing in his way in the quarterfinals. If Auger-Aliassime triumphs over the 24-time Grand Slam champion, he will take on the winner of the match between Jannik Sinner and Jan-Lennard Struff in the final four.
